Fifty men post treatment (radical prostatectomy or radiotherapy) for adenocarcinoma of the prostate, with rising PSA levels, drank eight ounces of pomegranate juice daily until further treatment was necessary. The time to doubling of PSA level increased from 15 months to 54 months, an almost four fold decrease in lag time of PSA levels. Men ini this study had to have PSA levels greater than 0.2 ng/mL and less than 5 ng/mL and Gleason scores less than 7. Pomegranate juice contains pollyphenols, gallotannins, anthocyanins and other flavonoids, all of which show potent anti oxidant and suggested anti carcinogenic effects. This peer reviewed study suggests that consumption of this juice can alter the course of the disease.
