What You Can Learn from Viagra Marketing Campaigns

By | August 27, 2019

– Hey ninjas and ninjettes,
Tim from Exposure Ninja here. In this video I’m gonna
admit to Googling something that very few people admit to, and by the end of this video
I’m gonna have convinced you to Google this thing at least
once every quarter as well. So, welcome to my obsession with Viagra. (dramatic music)
(ninja stars whooshing) (logo beeping) (mouse clicking) Why are we so obsessed with
searching for “buy Viagra”? Well, if you have ever owned a blog or you’ve ever had emails before, then you will know that “buy Viagra” is the target of a lot of spam. The reason it’s the
target of a lot of spam is it’s a very competitive term. So, what you get when you
search for the term “buy Viagra” is you get a free masterclass from some of the world’s
best digital marketers. So, we’ve got the organic pages here and we’ve got the PPC
listings up at the top. Now, one of the things that
you’ll notice about PPC with this term is that nobody
is actually using Viagra firstly in the ad copy, you’re not allowed to use
it ’cause it’s a brand name, you’re not allowed to mention it here, and they’ll also not be using it in their landing pages either. So, you’ll always go through
a kinda gateway page like this which doesn’t actually mention Viagra. And then, when we get onto this page, then we’re into the Viagra. So, that’s kind of interesting, but really not that interesting. One of the things that
we can learn, though, is exactly what they’re doing in the ads. So you can see here we’ve
got sites like Superdrug, playing up on the fact
that they’re potentially a safer option than
some of these unheard of other companies. So they’re using what they’ve got, they’re selling what they’ve got, which is a reputable brand name. You can see the ad copy is
basically all about that. So, “Over 900,000 Superdrug Customers,” they’re using that for credibility. And then they’re saying, “77% of online erectile
deficiency treatments are fake. “Don’t risk it, buy with
Superdrug, a trusted brand.” It’s a pretty bold, bold ad but I absolutely love the
angle that they’re taking and it really stands out. But I think what’s just as interesting is the organic results that are coming up, and there’s a lot that
can be learned from these. Now, in fact, one of my
favourite Viagra sites of all, in fact one of my favourite
websites of all time is this one here, the
DoctorFox.co.uk site. It’s actually lost some of its ranking since the core algorithm update recently which was a kind of correction
of Google’s medic algorithm or certainly related to
Google’s medic algorithm. So it seems to have lost
a bit of visibility, but still a fantastic page. We’re gonna look at this one and then we’re gonna look at
the top ranking sites as well. So, the reason that I love this page is because whatever objection you have about this website or Dr. Fox or their product, is answered on this page. It’s a fantastic page. So, look at the credibility
that they’re using everywhere. We’ve got these five stars
here, Dr. Fox rated excellent. We’ve got the five stars here,
lots and lots of reviews. We’ve got their registered pharmacy number and we can see it’s fully UK registered. We’ve got these kind
of trust signals here. We’ve got a video about
how it works all branded so it looks really good as well. We’ve got questions answered
about delivery terms as well. The fact that it’s discreet, so they’re answering a
potential objection there. We’ve got the CQC rating of good. And then we’ve got the
kind of verifications. So, obviously, this site doesn’t have the brand name of Superdrug but what it does do is a really good job of laying everything it has
out in front of the customer. So, let’s say that we’re
okay with Dr. Fox now, we’re already okay with
ordering the website, we pretty much trust it. What about Viagra, how
much do we know about it, is this a scary purchase for us? Well, for some people Viagra
is just like a commodity. They’ve had it before, they
know is what they need, they’ve tried it, brilliant,
they’re just gonna reorder it. So, for those people, it’s all about how easy it is to reorder and the price. Because if it’s a commodity, if they’re not selling
any other expertise, it’s just a price decision. So they’ve got this pricing table nice and visible above the fold so you can go straight
through and purchase. That’s really simple. It’s the other audience who maybe hasn’t bought Viagra before, who’s a little bit scared or maybe a bit intimidated
by the whole thing, because after all this is
the perfect sort of purchase for online because no one has
to know that you’re making it, and it’s that audience which
is really well catered to. So, look at all the
information that we’ve got here about Viagra. So, we got the thing about how it works, how to take it, different
dosages, does it work every time? Are there any side effects? Yes there are and it’s giving them and it’s even linked to more
details about some of them. It’s got warnings, it’s got information
about recreational misuse, it’s got different variants, alternative treatments with links through to those drugs’
pages on this site as well. Information about ED and then we’ve got all of the kind of FAQs and the answers to any possible question that you might have. Then we’ve got the order button, a kind of of echo of the order button just in case you’re ready
to go at that point. Then we’ve got reviews, then we’ve got the order process, then we’ve got even more information. (Tim sighs) So, it does pretty much everything that you possibly need
to know about Viagra, so it’s a fantastic page. Now, the Superdrug page,
which is overtaking it and it’s now top ranking, top of Google, and it’s in fact at this very moment it’s actually ranking
two positions on Google. So, what have they done well? Well, they’ve got the Schema
markup for their reviews, so they’ve got their
reviews star rating showing, which is good. Some of these other competitors haven’t. What else have we got
that’s great on this page? Nice and simple page. You’ve got free delivery, so that’s probably gonna encourage an increase in click-through rates. We’ve got the prices
very clearly laid out. Start the order as well. We’ve got a bit of information down here about “Can I buy Viagra online?” which is a bit strange
’cause obviously you can, that’s exactly what we’re doing, but obviously they’re just
targeting that phrase, “buy Viagra online,” aren’t they? So that’s why they’ve got that. A bit of info here, a bit more info that you
can link through as well. And then some of kind of
generic info about Viagra. Now, this content is nowhere
nearly as nicely laid out. This feels really kind
of generic SEO content rather than something that’s user focused, but still there’s plenty of it. We’ve got all the info about side effects. Drug interactions. Then we’ve got the customer reviews, which are hosted by a
third-party site, Trustpilot, the easiest game of the whole thing. It just feels like a completely scam, but anyway, that’s another story. And we’ve got a lot of
reviews coming through here. Then we’ve got alternative treatments with links through to them. Some of them are even broken. And then we’ve got further reading. This is their real area of strength. Look at this, this is
basically a knowledge base. This is all about every possible question that you may have about Viagra, they’ve got an article which
details really good answers. So, “Can you take Viagra with alcohol?” That phrase, purely
targeting search traffic. And then here we go, we’ve got loads of information
about how that works, and there’s a CTA as well. So that knowledge base is
really gonna be helping giving Google a lot of trust. And actually, one thing that
we didn’t just look out there is, “Can you take Viagra with alcohol?” Look, it’s being written by Dr. Louisa Draper. So it’s credibility in
the post medic here. I know that I can trust this content because it’s written by Dr. Louisa Draper. And look, she’s even got the
stethoscope around her neck so we know that she is 1,000% legit. So, very, very strong page. Look at this. Another really aggressive
play by Superdrug. There’s someone really aggressive in Superdrug’s marketing team. They’ve got content about
Tesco Viagra and Boots Viagra. So they’re targeting their
competitors’ brand names with content on their site. Freaking love it! Good for you, guys. And look, they’re comparing
the price per pill, showing that they are same
price at small volumes and then cheaper at higher volumes. Great, go for it. Look, these sorts of questions, that is just pure SEO content. Fair play to the lads and lasses. Mostly lads for this product. So, yeah, that is why I absolutely love searching for “buy Viagra” and try to do it at least once a quarter just to see who is winning in one of the most
competitive spaces online. If you found this video useful and you want more digital marketing videos from me and Exposure Ninja, then don’t forget to click on the like and subscribe
