WebSite Auditor Webinar [SEO PowerSuite Webinar Series]

By | September 15, 2019

Hello guys, thanks for joining our
webinar, today I will be talking about the Website Auditor tool, and with this
application, how it can help you analyze your website structure. So with the help
of Website Auditor, you can check both technical issues and also get some
optimization advice on how to improve your content and to help your website
rank better. If you have any questions please feel free to ask in our chat room
and my assistant Katherine will be glad to answer them and after I finish I will
also look through the questions and answer them as well. So let’s begin.
Website Auditor is the application that you can buy either as a separate stand-alone tool or if you purchase SEO PowerSuite tool pack it will be included
into the package. As soon as you install and start the application it
will ask you to create the first project. And you will need to enter the domain
that you would like to analyze. I advise you if your website is using the HTTPS
protocol, I advise you to start with HTTPS to avoid some confusion with the
link structure or with the site structure, but if you are just using HTTP protocol
then you might just enter their domain name or your website without any HTTP or
www versions. So you click Next and there you will be offered to specify your crawler
settings; let me just describe in more details on each section here because it
determines how Website Auditor will be scanning your website. So the first menu
is the robots.txt instructions and this menu allows you to tell Website Auditor
to follow your robots.txt rules so in this case if you select the specific
robot name here, then Website Auditor will be following
only those rules that are prescribed for this specific robot in your robots.txt
file, or if you don’t want to follow any rules and you just want to collect all
pages of your website you can disable this option and in this case Website
Auditor will ignore robots.txt and will collect all pages of your website. The
same is applied for the user agent menu where you can choose which user agent
Website Auditor will be using when scanning your website, as you know it is
possible to build a website structure in a way that it will be
providing different content for different browsers. So if you are
building your website in this way you are able to specify here some user agent
and you will see the site structure as it is seen from this specific browser.
One more parameter that is available here is the scan depth limit in this
case let’s say if you set some number here like one,
two, or three, in this case Website Auditor will not go beyond the click
depth indicated in this option. So if I set here
two, then Website Auditor will go down only two clicks from your homepage and
will not collect pages that are beyond that limit. So this option is
very good if you have a really big website and you don’t want to collect
all pages but you want just to have a brief review of your site structure so
you can set the scan depth limit of just 1 or even 0 clicks even. In this case it will
just collect only the top pages. And one more option is to search for orphan
pages, this option lets you find pages that do not have any incoming links
from other pages of your website, so these pages are
very difficult to find for your visitors and are pretty difficult to find
for search engines. So to make sure that you don’t have such pages, you may enable
this option and Website Auditor will scan and search for these pages and will
list them in your project so we will be able to review and put some links to
these orphan pages from other URLs of your website. The next menu that you can
find is the filtering option, using this menu you are able to either
exclude or vice-versa to tell Website Auditor to scan only specific
directories or pages of your website. At the same time you are able to select the
types of resources that Website Auditor will collect, by default it collects all
resources not only HTML pages but also JavaScript resources, CSS, images, videos,
and all other resources that are available on your website, but even if
you don’t want them to be collected you might disable that here in this menu and
in this case the application will collect only HTML pages and will not
analyze you JavaScript or any other types of files that are found on your
website. The speed menu lets you determine how frequently Website Auditor
will be sending requests to your server, if you are using some low budget website
and it has some specific limits on the number of queries that you are able to
send to a server you can use this option to set a specific limit in Website
Auditor so it will not set your website down and will just for instance, send only one request per 10 seconds or vice-versa 1 – 10 requests per second just
as you want it to. So it will send the number of requests
as you specify here. The URL parameters, this menu helps you to either include or
exclude dynamic pages in your project. The thing is that some web stores – online
shops they very frequently have a lot of dynamic pages or products and different
items from comparison pages and in some cases you may not need to have them all
in your project because you might not need to optimize every one of
those pages but only focus on directory pages that is why in this menu,
you’re able to either exclude all parameters so in this case Website
Auditor will ignore all dynamic pages of your website and will collect only
static pages or if you disable this option in this case Website Auditor will
collect all types of dynamic pages that are found on your website. And finally
the Advanced Options menu where you can choose either to include or exclude
subdomains from your project, if you are using a JavaScript generated content you
may need to enable the JavaScript execution option because by default
Website Auditor does not execute JavaScript and the pages that use
JavaScript generated content they will not be seen by Website Auditor so it
will not be able to analyze that. And finally if you are building
a website and it is available online but it’s somehow protected by a password,
this menu allows you to indicate the user name and password so Website
Auditor will be able to access your website and scan it in advance so you
can just run full analyses on your website before it is available to search
engines and fix all the issues before it goes online.
That is all, so once you finish with these settings you hit the finish button
and Website Auditor will start collecting your project. It may take usually like
10-15 minutes if a website is just several thousand pages if you have
several hundred thousand pages it may take more than an hour, maybe two, three
hours, it depends actually on a lot of factors not only on the size of your
website but also on the server response time, so if your server takes like five
or six seconds to load the page it may really take a lot of hours to build
whole website structure. That’s why you have to be patient and wait till the
application has completely scanned, and as soon as the project is ready you will see
this default project table where you will find all the pages that have been
collected by Website Auditor for your website. So as you see here, you
have the list of pages and it’s number of factors that have been analyzed
during the scan. So you can check the title, meta descriptions, robots.txt
instructions, and many other metrics that are available for you to check, so you
can go page by page and see all the factors that have been analyzed and you
can add even more factors here by clicking the edit menu at the top right
corner and you will find many other factors that can be added to the current
project, to the current table. So in this case you can analyze all the factors
and look through the issues that have been collected by Website Auditor. At the
bottom, when you select any page in the table at the bottom you
will find additional table which will include both all links that point to
this selected page and all outgoing leads that go to other pages from this
selected URL. This is a pretty convenient way to
actually to find broken links because if some page is marked with a broken URL in
your project, so you know to think that the issue you have to remove all links
that point to that broken URL on your website. So to do that you just need to
select a page that is marked as a broken page in your project and then
switch to the links to page menu and you will find the list of pages that link to
that non-existent URL. So we have to go to these pages and manually delete those broken links and then click the rebuild project so Website Auditor
will rescan your website and will build a new structure that will not have these
broken URLs anymore. In this workspace you are given several ways to manage your
data, the first one is to use the advanced filter where you can create
different filtering conditions to easily sort out your results for example you
can create filtering conditions to search only for broken links or
to I don’t know to check by the number of broken images well as you see
there are like 40 different factors which you can use to create different
filtering conditions. Or it is also the quick menu the quick filter available
here at the very top which you can use to quickly find some specific URLs in
your project for instance to find only by pages, as you see it instantly lists
you only the pages that contain the by element in their URLs etc. Or you can
create a new workspace from from this page by clicking the plus button and
then selecting the types of columns that you would like to
having your current workspace so as you see at the very top you have the list of
predefined workspaces but you may create your own workspaces as many of them as
you want and in each workspaces in each workspace you may create your own view
of the elements that you would like to see in that specific workspace. It is
also possible to export these results from every workspace, if you use the
enterprise version of Website Auditor you are able to export the results using
the quick export button and then choose either to export all records or only
selected records etc, so it will save them into a CSV file or if you use the
professional version, you are able to export the results manually just select them in your
project then right click Choose to copy all columns and then you can paste the
results into your Excel spreadsheet. If you don’t want to go page by page and
analyze every page separately there is the site audit section where you can go
briefly through all the factors that have been analyzed by Website Auditor
and quickly find the issues that have been detected so as you see there are
factors such as indexing, redirects, encoding issues, dynamic URLs, on-page
factors, all these factors have been analyzed by Website Auditor during the
when it was creating a project during the scan of your website, and if the
factor has no issues it is marked with the green mark but if there are some
issues found for some factor it will be marked with this specific warning sign
and once you click it it will give you a brief explanation of what
exactly this factor is about and how you can fix it. The information marks
indicate that there are some URLs that need your attention it does not mean
that it is a problem it just needs your attention to review the list of URLs and
to make sure that actually they are correct here and this is what you want
how do you want them to be. For instance if you have the resources
restricted from indexing factor, and it doesn’t mean that it is something bad or
good, it just means that you have the list of URLs and you just need to make
sure that these are URLs that you really want to restrict from indexing,
that you really want to avoid to be indexed by search engines and if you see
that these URLs are ok and you just don’t need to do anything about this. But
if you see that some URL here is restricted and you don’t want it to be
restricted, then you need to go and to your robots.txt file and fix it so this
information mark is not something that’s an issue but something that needs your
revision. In Website Auditor you can also with the help of Website Auditor you can
also create XML sitemap for your website which you can then submit to Google, so
to create an XML sitemap switch to the pages section and click the sitemap
button and it will show you the list of pages that have been collected by
Website Auditor and so you can here we can select which pages you want to
be included into the XML sitemap so just select the pages, click Next, choose where
you want these sitemap to be saved either on your local hard drive or
whether it uploaded directly to your FTP server and once you click Next it will
be saved to the selected destination. The same way you can create a
robots.txt file by clicking the robots.txt button and then if you
already have some robots.txt file available on your website you can click
to fetch from server, so Website Auditor will collect your
rules and will list them, all the rules here so you can either edit them, or add
some new rules just disallow or vice versa allow certain directories, or
just for indexing and then again once you’re done with the editing your
robots.txt file, you click Next, choose where to save it, and then upload
to your server to make it available online. Another cool feature which you
may find in Website Auditor is the visualization map this is some sort of a
graphical representation of your website structure so you can find how your pages
are connected to each other so if you select the page here you will see all
the connections that go between the pages, or you might just click the
all connections view and see how they are interlinking between each other but
this is not just to show you how your website structure looks
like, but with the help of this feature, you are able to build your website structure
and make sure that all pages are properly interlinked with each other. For
instance I want to add several pages and I want to see how this will
affect my site structure. To do that I just click the Add button, then I enter the address of a new page that I theoretically wants to add
to my website, I click add I have this page here and then I want to see if I
link this page to my home page or to some other pages, I will be
able to see how this will affect my total website structure so I can just
click Add to add link from that page and then select the URL
that I want to link to, click Add so I have now connections with other pages on
my website and then if I switch here to the internal PageRank and then click
the recalculate button it will quickly recalculate and show me the distribution
of PageRank of internal PageRank across the pages and will show me how this new
page has influenced the distribution of this PageRank. So this way I can add as
many pages as I want here so it will simulate my website structure and once I
see that everything is okay and the internal PageRank is distributed in the
way I want it to be distributed, I can export this changelog here and then
give it to my webmaster so he will follow the instructions and add the pages
that are listed here in the changelog. So this is not only just to
view your current state of a website but to see how your future website structure
can be built and how if you remove some pages how this will influence the
distribution of your internal PageRank. Also there is the all resources section,
which you can find under the site structure which lists all the resources
that have been found by Website Auditor because the pages section includes all
the HTML pages and the resources section includes also JavaScript, CSS, images,
videos, or all types of resources so you can easily filter by the server status
code and see and find some redirects pr broken resources if they are found
anywhere on your website and quickly fix them. Another cool feature which you can
access in Website Auditor is the content analysis, so this section can
give you some optimization advice what you need to do it is to switch to the
content analysis click add page, here you’ll find a list of pages that have
been collected by Website Auditor, you select the page that you would like to
analyze, click Next, and then enter your target keywords. I recommend to enter
like two – three target phrases because it makes no sense to optimize the
page for a large number of keywords. Then you select your preferred search engine,
and click finish and after that Website Auditor will go to the
selected search engine, will pick up your top 20 competitors and then will
compare your page and all page elements with your best competitors and will
provide you with this quick page audit report where it will indicate at the
very top here the average, the total optimization score, and also will list
the elements that have been analyzed both content and technical factors here
are listed, and again pretty much the same as in the site structure site audit
report, here in the content analysis report it will also mark the elements
with green or this yellow warning signs if an element needs
more improvement and it will also give you some recommendations how you can
improve that page element for instance in my case I am missing some key words
in my Meta Description tag, so I switch to this section and I see that there are
no keywords in my meta description while at the same time it is recommended to
use at least 27 words in my meta description and to use my keywords at
least two times because my average competition is using the approximate
number of words and keywords in their meta descriptions. So if I switch to the
competitors tab here I will be able to view
the list of competitors that have been found and to use their Meta Description
tags and be able to get some ideas to how I can build up my own Meta
Description. So once I decide to make any changes on my page I don’t need to do
this online and just wait how this will affect my ranking position, I can go to
the content editor section here in directly in Website Auditor and it
will upload my page in the internal browser and again I have the
optimization score indicated here so I can do all the changes directly in this
content editor. So if I can just delete some elements and the optimization score
will be changing dynamically depending on the changes I
make on my page, so this way I can easily see whether it is these changes are good
or bad and once I am done with the changes I can click the Save button and
save the results as a HTML file which I can upload them directly on my website,
so I don’t need to do any coding or you know just web development things because
everything is saved here and as a simple file which I need just upload on my
website. The TF-IDF section, these are the keywords that have been collected from
my top competitors so this is some sort of a keyword research feature which you
can use to get some keyword suggestions for your own page, so I have a full list
of keywords and for each keyword it shows me the TF-IDF factor, so this
factor indicates the importance of when of a keyword, so the
larger the score, the more important that specific keyword is. This way I can
easily find most important keywords that my competitors are using and decide
whether I need to add them to my page to improve its
optimization level or not. By the way there is a recommendation column you
will find here which will indicate whether it makes sense to add that
specific keywords to my page, or in some case if I’m using it too
frequently it will show that I need to use that specific word less, this
way I can go through the list get some keyword ideas and then apply them into
my page to improve my optimization score. And finally the report section which contains the list of issues that have
been analyzed, as you see you can create just a brief summary report which will
just list the elements that have been analyzed or you can switch to the
detailed report which will include not only the list of issues but will
actually give a very detailed analysis for every element that has been analyzed
with the long description and even list the exact URLs that have been found as
having issues. These reports can be edited and you can click the edit button
here and it will and enter the template menu where you will be able to choose
what kind of information with that specific report should contain, so as you see
this left panel contains the list of widgets which you can add to the current
report it is possible to drag and drop these widgets across the report and to
place them where you want them to be placed and vice versa you can delete
some widgets from your project. Do as you want to make your report better,
and then once you’re done with your report template you can save this report
as a PDF or HTML file by using the quick save option but again
this feature is available only in the enterprise level licenses or you can
share it online using the special share button so you will be given this
shareable link which you can open in your external browser and this report
will be available online so you can send this link to clients and they will be
able to view this report. This link is a white label so it does not contain
information about our service. That is the brief description of Website
Auditor and the main features, please if you have questions ask them in the chat
room and I will be glad to answer your questions. Well how often does it make sense to use
this tool to check a website, well yes as Kathryn says it makes sense to check it
as soon as you make some changes there because it depends if you apply some
changes and then you you need to analyze the site structure because in
Website Auditor will be able to indicate whether you have done some little bad
things to your website structure so you need to quickly revise this and see how
your changes have affected the site structure. Okay guys any more questions? Okay, it looks like we have no more
questions so thanks for watching our webinar and tomorrow I will be describing the
SEO Spyglass tool. So if you’re interested, please join tomorrow at the
same time and have a good day everyone. Bye!
