    The pivot of the earth that creates the seasons we know, over time would that pivot diminish until eventually earth's equator would be perpendicular to that of the sun's? And hence no more seasons?

    @PBS Space Time So I've seen lots of explanations about how gyroscopic precession works, and I've got a pretty solid understanding of it.  What I've never been able to come to grips with is why it works that way.  Intuition tells me it might have something to do with inertia, but the effect is always exactly 90' out of phase with the force no matter the force or mass (right?), so that's probably wrong.  I realize it's tangential to the discussion here but I'd love to hear an explanation of it, whether in one of your videos, or some other source you may be aware of.

    Anyway, these videos are fascinating and informative, keep up the great work.

    Honestly, I think that in 2,000 years humans will either be extinct, or we will have progressed to a state in which we no longer need a calendar (trans-humanism, for example.)

    Oddly enough, Australia did have snow on christmas day in 2006.  We've had an unseasonably cold day around christmas a few years in the last decade or so.  It's rather odd.

    You said "Jan 1st location in space is constantly moving".  Shouldn't that have included "in relation to the sun" because even if the year was exactly 360 degrees of revolution the location in space would still be different due to the movement of the solar system through space?

    Any idea why we start our calendar in the middle of winter? Is there anything astronomically special about January 1? I think we should totally revamp the weeks and months system into something completely rational.

    Have you read the book The Martian? If yes, how scientifically accurate is rescue at the end of the story? from how Mark modify the MAV to how commander Lewis try to catch up with the MAV in space?

    My guess is that in the future time itself will be redefined. Well not so much redefined as used differently. For the sake of having a more generalized way of telling time regardless of the sun, it would probably become that time units will be different as they also say something about the location of where it is measured. So clocks will be personalized to tell what exactly "your time" is instead of what time it is in your country. Whatever algorithms follows with this is beyond me but I would imagine it would be a more space-time focused version of longitude and latitude, where the unit of time shows the location in space and from there it can be identified with an algorithm what that time is compared to your time.

    Living in Sweden with a pretty long winter and sunlight for just a few hours certain days is pretty depressing. Aussies have it pretty good. Snow is pretty awesome, the darkness and sometimes rain and snow combined makes those months pretty dim. Aussies could use maybe two weeks of real winter with beautiful snow, otherwise I am just jelous of their geographical location. The wild fires and strong venom everywhere sucks I guess. Tony Abbott is a fucking moron, pretty off-topic but I'd probably prefer not seeing the sun for a couple of months than having him as a leader, otherwise Australia is among the top countries I'd like to live in. Swedish summer is awesome right now though, and I can see the new Mad Max here so I can't complain at the moment. OT: But when the new Mad Max game was revealed they had American accent, that was a crime against humanity that was rectified. Had a few drinks and am going to watch Border Security Australia right now, reminding me I might not even be able to visit because I have a small criminal record. Sorry for the rambling. XD

    Just a question I thought of today on my balcony reading my physics book before work. When a photon is released from the sun (after thousands to millions of years bouncing around beneath the photosphere), it travels 93 million miles to earth, hits the ground, where some of the light ricochets up to a building, etc. How long does that happen and what happens to the light? Obviously it isn't endless in the visible spectrum but a photon or light wave doesn't just die out after energy has been exhausted so where does it go or what happens to it after initially impacting an object?

    If we become a space faring species, tracking time could become a challenge considering Relativity. I wonder if spacetime is intrinsically linked to matter and motion in a preordained way. I guess it would be impossible to test. Oh well. Kudos for responding to many of the rude comments that you receive!

    I have a question
    If something is rotating at near the speed of light would it have two separate centripetal forces acting on it since it has relativistic mass and rest mass? or am I not looking at mass correctly

    I feel like we'll have to revamp our ways of measuring time in the next thousand or two years simply for convenience. After all, nobody will want to write "December 12th, 10000" on forms in several thousand years. After a certain number of years, we seem to reset the ride – the series of years that the roman calender had ended up lasting a thousand or so years, the zoroastrian calender was around for about 2000 years, even the jewish calender only goes back around 6000 years. I know there are a number of factors that help to account for all this, but I bet some of it is convenience – small numbers are easy, big numbers not so much. That might suggest that humanity likes to re conceptualize when timekeeping begins using units that are hard to keep track of (i know that was phrased poorly.) Any other thoughts?

    It snows on Christmases in some parts of Australia (like the Victorian alps) but it's vary rare.

    Well I'd really like to see a video about how earth's rotation actually looks. I understand the precession of the equinoxes, but I heard there's another type of precession around the sun? Also what does that "age of aquarius" mean?

    you said you have a leap year when you shouldn't if the year is a multiple of 400. but multiples of 400 are divisible by 4 so area leap year anyway are they not?

    for anyone living in australia i have a drink i make which would be perfect for you guys on x-mas

    use a tip of a tea spoon of cloves, about a tea spoon of cinnamon a bit of dark rum and some vanilla icecream and milk and run it in the mixer untill you get a good milk shake…

    It tastes of x-mas but is perfect in the summer heat.
    it's the perfect australian X-mas drink!

    living in sweden makes it less perfect… but for any australian this should be perfect!

    I call it "Julefrus"

    (which kinda translates into x-mas free though in sweden we use a old pagan winter solstice name to refer to the season so the translation inexcat…
    "frus" is also just a part of frusen (frozen) so maybe julefroz is more accurate…)

    When I lived in Tasmania we used to get snow in the middle of summer every now and then, IIRC once we even had 2cm on xmas eve. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Tasmania Shows -6.8C for November for example

    The Mayan solar calendar requires no adjustments for leap years and such. But If I'm reading this correctly, may require alteration to insure it does not run out in 2000 years.

    About the billboards, I would say placing them around Jupiter or in the Lagrange points of Jupiter would be ideal. I also like the idea of having them orbit in multiple planes to increase the chances of being seen.

    If we ever do become space-faring, would we also then discontinue the use of "light-year"?  Since earth seasons aren't a good measurement out in space, what good is the distance light travels in an earth year when we live on Betelgeuse 5?

    5:24 That was only really true for TNG onward – The Original Series, the movies with the Original Series cast and the Animated Series had star dates all over the place with the only apparent real rule being "later = bigger number".

    I'm always amazed that centuries before Christ, ancient Greek observers could discern such nuances in apparent heavenly bodies' motions through the heavens that they could infer something as subtle as a 26,000 year cyclic precession of the earth's rotational axis.

    Aristarchus (310 – 230 BC) and 150 years later, Hipparchus (190 – 120 BC), are usually recognized as the earliest astronomers to report on such a precession of the equinoxes, estimating it at about 1° per century – not too far from the actual value for antiquity, 1.38°..

    How'd they do that??? They almost had to have used some sort of long-term records of say, Polaris's positional variations at the same point in the yearly orbit. Or something???

    Would the atomic clocks we use for universal time compensate for earth's gravity? Would it compensate for changes due to changes in mass in earth's crust+mantle*core?

    Would it be better to put an atomic clocks in empty space?

    To my knowledge, Persian calendar right now is the most accurate calendar, but I don't know if it's scientifically true or how precise it is.
