How to Optimize Your Blog for SEO

Hey everyone! I’m Tricia Clements with And today I wanted to talk to you about optimizing
your blog for SEO. So, I know you’ve probably been told “You
need to write a blog so that you can get traffic to your site and get more sales”, but there’s
not just writing the blog and sharing it on social media. You also need to make sure you optimize it
for SEO and that’s what I want to talk about today is going to focus primarily on WordPress
and then a little bit on the Yoast SEO plugin. And the reason I love WordPress so much is
over 30% of all websites are built on WordPress and a lot of that has to do with all of the
built-in features for SEO that WordPress has. So, the first thing I want to talk about – that
you need to do is determining your topic and determining your keyword and the best thing
you do with that is to basically decide your schedule and be consistent with it and I like
to come up with… I would say the best thing is to come up with
at least 3 months of topics in advance. If you can do more, I would recommend; try
to get out to having a year in advance of topics done because a little bit of brain
storming on that can save you a lot of time in the long run. Now for your keyword, you do need to do some
keyword research to make sure that you’re selecting keywords and using them that are
best for you and your site. You can use… there are a lot of different tools out there
to help with that. If you’re looking for keywords for instance,
for a YouTube video – I love TubeBuddy. If you’re doing for your blog there are
several things, some of them are paid ones, SpyFu, Moz. Different things like that but then also there
is a free Chrome extension called KeywordsEverywhere that I really like to use as well. So, the keyword; doing the research on that
is really important and it’s not something that you can automatically pickup and learn
overnight. You just need to test it out and try and see
which platform and apps you like to use the most and how about – what words best for
your site. The next thing I want to talk about is your
meta description. So, you got your keyword, your topic, your
keywords then you’re going to write a short/little description about what your blog is talking
about and this should be about… 160 characters and no longer than that. This is basically the description if someone
find your blog online through search engine. It’s going to come up with the title and
then the description. You want it to be really concise and make
sure that you’re really pulling people in it, pulling them and getting them to come
in and visit your blog. It’s really important to – also you need
to make sure you have your keyword there in that meta description. Now for Yoast SEO plugin, it’s at the bottom
of your blog post, there will be a place that you can get in and change that. If you do not change that Google will picks
what Google thinks is a good meta description and it may not be necessarily be the best
for your blog topic. Now the next thing is going to be your categories
and tags, make sure that you include categories and tags for your blog post. These are going to help group different things
for your different blog post that you’re writing. The categories are much broader topic, the
tags are more narrow/specific topic and those are going to help when people are searching
for different topics on your website, it just helps them find your blog a lot easier. The next thing I want to talk about is the
readability. So, you really need to have headings throughout
your blog post and by that I don’t mean to simply go in and increase the font size. You need to change that to the H2 headings
throughout. You need to have at least – you need to
have one H1 heading which is the primary heading for your blog that should have your keyword
in it. But you do need to have throughout the blog
post – have some of the paragraphs separated out by different headings, these are going
to be designated as H2 headings. You want to do this because Google picks up
on that, the search engine picks up on that. It makes them be able to search your blog
and be able to do that a lot easier. So, make sure that you are doing that, it’s
got to have that H1, H2 coding in it. The other thing is for readability, there
are lots of different things for you blog post – you want to have shorter sentences,
shorter paragraphs – make it easy to read. Like I said the shorter paragraphs but then
also you can do a few things in there like bold the few words here or there that are
important. Make sure you’re using bullet points or
list as much as you can in there. Its just kind of separate it – makes a lot
easier to read. Also make sure you include an image of two,
people like looking at images. You can embed a video into your blog post
so that’s real thing. Also, you want to think about your pixel size. When you’re in there you want to make sure
you don’t have a really small pixel size where people find it hard to read – I would
say go at least 14 to 16 px size. The other thing is your links – internal
and external links. You want to have at least 2 of each of those
in your blog post and what I mean by internal links are links to other content to your website. So, for mine it’s it would
be linking to either other blog with in my site or products, services, anything else
my website. Now, for external links this is really good
to help build your trust factor and your recognition online. You need to basically go out and find some
different sites that have authority and link to those different sites. So, you want to pick something, find something
– let’s say you are talking some statistics and you find those to other websites. Go ahead and link directly to that and give
them credit for that but it’s also good for authority to have that link to an external
website that’s not just there in yours, that’ll help with your SEO. And images, make sure adding like I said – Images
that’ll help with readability but also when you’re doing your images make sure you’re
adding alt text and alt description to your images and that should include that keyword. Make sure they got that keyword there in there
for the alt text and the alt description. And when you’re putting that alt text in
and you put the keyword be descriptive about the picture. Don’t have something that just says “Picture
with cute dog.”, you want to write something like “Girl bathing cute dog.”, something
very descriptive like that so that people can tell exactly what the picture is about. You can include things like infographics on
your blog – that’s helpful to help share it. Now, we already said you need to share on
social media, your email list but this was specific talking about things to do to optimize
your blog so the search engines – for search engine optimization. And I went through the list pretty quickly
but I am going to have a blog post later today that you can look at and go through each one
