How to Learn SEO: My Secret Method For Search Engine Optimization

By | August 5, 2019

The best way to get consistent traffic to
your website is through SEO. But if you don’t know SEO, what should you
do? Hi everyone, I’m Neil Patel and today I’m
going to teach you how to do SEO. The first thing you need to do is practice. Practice makes perfect. If you don’t practice how are you ever going
to get good at something or even learn something? You don’t want to practice on your main business
or your main idea. Create a junk website, one that’s going to
be fun and that you can be excited about. It could be a blog, so go to WordPress and
create a WordPress blog. You want to do it on your own domain name. Don’t do WordPress. Com, do WordPress. Org and if you’re not sure on how to set it
up, just sigh up for a HostGator or BlueHost, they have a click install for WordPress. Now that you have your website set up, you
need to start blogging. Pick any topic that interests you, write content. Now that you got the content done, the next
thing you want to do is install the Yoast SEO plugin. The Yoast SEO plugin is a shortcut. It makes your blog optimized somewhat for
Google. Actually makes it really optimized from Google,
but of course you’re going to have to do some work, by putting in the keywords in title
tag, your meta description. There’s walk through tutorials on how to use
the Yoast plugin, and just go through them and you’ll be fine. After you have the Yoast plugin up and running,
the next thing I want you to do is cross ink your blog post together. So, let’s say you have two posts, one’s on
dogs and one’s on cats, and in your dog article your talk about how dogs hate cats. Well, you can link to the cats article from
the dog one, and in your cats article you can talk about how cats love pestering dogs. You can link that cats article to the dog
article. That’s what crosslinking is. You don’t want to just cross link two posts
together, you want to cross link all your relevant posts together when it makes sense. If it doesn’t make sense, don’t link them
together. And last but not least, you want to start
building links. The way you build links is, you go to ahrefs.com
A-H-R-E-F-S.com, put in the competitor URL. You’ll see who links to them, then you want
to email these guys, right? You go to those sites who link to your competitors
then you say, “Hey, I notice that you’re linking to xyz.com. We have similar business within the same region
but we also offer one, two, or three services that they don’t, so you should also check
us out, it may be useful to your website visitors, and if you like us feel free and link to us. Cheers, Neil.” It’s that simple. Sure, a lot of people are going to ignore
your email but if you get five out of 100 people to link back to you that’s great. That’s how you get your start in SEO. You do those steps, over time you’ll get more
traffic and then after you learn those basics and you get the hang of it, if you want to
do some experimentation, by all means go and do a ton of experimentation. Because SEO is way more advanced than that,
and more complex, but you got to start off with the basics and that’s how you learn the
basics, it’s by doing it on your own website.

I've worked very hard on my website but struggled with SEO. Just recently, I installed Yoast. It's easy to use (lots of tutorials on their site, too) Makes me feel much better to see those green dots:) Time will show if it improves traffic.

    First of all congratulations.
You've hit the 12k mark in less than 3 month. And I know in the 6th it will definitely hit 25 if not 30.

And what about Quicksprout and Neilpatel 😀

You and me both knows, there's no better source available to learn SEO and all the marketing stuff, except them.

And installing Yoast SEO is perfect for beginners to get started with basics of SEO, but there will be some problem with link building in the initial days.
But I think with time, they'll get good at it.

I Googled SEO several years ago and Neil Patels name came up in the results. I had no Idea how you get traffic to a website. I have not done tremendous SEO work but I learned a lot about SEO from reading Neil's Blog. One of my websites has already done over 500k this year and I do not think it would have been possible if I did not start paying attention to Neil's blog. Thanks Neil

Thanks Neil. Let's say one article on dogs links to cat and the cat article links to dogs. Isn't this cyclic nature bad for seo, even if the linking is relevant?

I got my first client just recently. My goal is to create a consulting company, but I am afraid I was practicing for longer than necessary. The problem is that clients will usually want to see a portfolio with a good ROI and it is hard, if not impossible to create something like this if you are just starting out or if you dont want to invest thousands upfront. I started learning SEO with a travel blog I launched at the time in 2014, but the problem was I was doing everything by myself and learning on the go and it got no where. However, I am thinking of revisiting this project soon now that my SEO skills and knowledge has greatly improved over the last couple of years and start rebuilding it again while hustling to build my consulting company or working in-house within an agency.

When you say "linking with other sites" or "backlinks" does it just mean the other sites sharing your links on their social media platform or having your link on their site?

Hey Neil. This video is really great as always. Can you tell us what kind of link building strategy will rule on 2018. As we know google always changed their algorithm. For example, ssl is not an important factor earlier but at the end of 2017 it's an ranking factor. Waiting for your valuable reply.
