Get Fact Up 4: SEO and What It Means For Your Business

(loud explosion) Today, we’re going to be getting fact up on search engine optimization or SEO and what it means for your business. And you don’t have to worry. We’re not gonna get too geek on you. – [Voiceover] Yeah, well. – Let’s be honest, SEO has been marketed in the early days as a way to
get you to number one position in the Google search engine results. In a nutshell, SEO is a
combination of technical tasks, which work to ensure your
website is well structured, your content is highly relevant,
each page is user-friendly, and is optimized for conversion. Some would argue
(whirring) that SEO is dead.
(bells chime) Take it from us, it’s not dead. It’s an important ingredient in every integrated digital marketing
strategy because the art of SEO tracks performance by
analyzing and improving organic search engine rank
and website conversion. It’s all about showing your
audience that you’re a rock star in creating kick-ass content
that people will want to share. And lo and behold, it’s
good content creation that is the driver for achieving good, organic search engine results when undertaking search
engine optimization tasks. There’s no denying that having
reputable, relevant links to your website is an
important ranking factor as mentioned in 2015,
Ranking Factors on moz.com. However obtaining these links
must be through organic means and because you deserve them,
not because you’ve gone out and purchased them or
requested those links. So what’s happening in SEO news right now? After warning webmasters in early 2014 about sneaky mobile redirects,
Google now says it will issue manual actions, but also offers
advice on how to clean up the unwanted redirects, as
seen on Search Engine Land a couple of weeks ago. Online marketers are bracing
for the next Penguin update to come soon.
(wind whistles) (Chris giggles) But now we know it’s most
likely to be released within the next two months. The Penguin update was
first launched in April 2012 to better catch websites
found to be buying links or obtaining them through link networks, designed primarily to
boost Google rankings. The key message here is “Don’t buy links” or appear on directory websites. News has emerged this
October 2015 that Google has been using a machine learning artificial intelligence
system called RankBrain to help sort through its search results. Machine learning is where
a computer teaches itself how to do something, rather
than being taught by humans or following detailed programming. Google confirmed RankBrain
as the third-most important signal in the ranking algorithm, an assurance that machine
learning is at play in live Google results. Google also just released an update to their mobile-friendly
algorithm, penalizing site using full-page ads that appears
before the destined webpage. In essence, these are
updates don’t mean much for those of you that are doing SEO right. However, here’s a few points that we’d like to cover with you. “Forget keyword stuffing.” No need to weave keywords
into your sentences. Just write normally and
Google will figure it out. Stop worrying and stop
creating unnatural links back to your website. If you’re building and
marketing your website properly, then your search engine rankings will come because that is the beauty of
Google’s most recent changes. This means that you have more time for creating engaging content, more social media marketing
time, more ad creation time, and “building integrated
online marketing campaigns.” And in time, you’re sure to dominate all of your online marketing channels. ♫ All of them ♫ In a recent report, Moz listed the most influential ranking factors. Number one was domain-level link quality and quality of all inbound
links to your website. Number two was page-level
link quantity and quality of inbound links to a specific page. Number three was page-level
keyword and content relevance, how well your on-page content
is written for the keywords being searched. And number four was all
of the technical (beeps), such as content length,
readability, Open Graph markup, uniqueness, load speed,
Structured Data markup, HTTPS. (chattering rapidly) (laid-back music) (chattering rapidly) You can test some of these technical features
