Do’s & Don’ts of SEO – Search Engine Optimisation

Hi I’m Rafid Nassir from, and today
I’m going to be taking you through a few do’s and don’ts with SEO, and optimising your website I’m going to be starting off with slapping
on links for the sake of SEO. Now this is a, this used to be a very common practice,
and it still is with a few cases, where people would just get links for the sake of SEO,
and it’s fair enough because back just 1 year ago, maybe 2 years ago, it was a known thing
that; the more links you have, the higher you’ll rank on Google, but that’s not what
you want to be doing. What you want to be doing is analysing your
link profile, cleansing your link profile, making sure that all the links that are pointing
to your site already are all relevant, they’re all there for a reason, they’re all useful
and what you should be doing instead of just ‘slapping on links’ is attracting natural
links through things like infographics, informative blogs, site content. So, those kind of things
work really well because if you’re producing content that’s really engaging and really
useful to the user, that’s going to be shared naturally with their friends & family and
whoever they might think this is useful to. Next point I want to go through here is optimising
a limited number of pages on a website. Now, this is still very very common, and it’s when
people just focus on the “money making pages” on the website. So, when they focus on the
homepage, a few product pages, maybe some category pages, and they just optimise them
and neglect the rest of the site. That’s not what you want to be doing. What you want to
be doing is looking at the bigger picture. The whole website. You built this whole website,
you’ve got all these pages there for a reason. So optimise the right pages for the right
keywords, make sure that the ‘FAQ’s’ page is being focused on, make sure your ‘about
us’ page is also being focused on, because they’re all very important. Fix technical issues on the website, and that
will give a better user experience. So, if you’ve got a page that’s loading really slow,
if you’ve got little glitches here and there on the website; all that stuff needs to go!
Because at the end of the day, the user experience is something that Google looks at, and Google
will see if you’ve got a site that’s not really working very well, and when someone lands
on it, and they’re kind of lost, have a bad experience, that’s just not what Google wants
to have for their users’ searches so they’re going to pull you down the rankings a little
bit for that. ‘Writing content for the sake of SEO’. Now,
I guess this is less common now, because more people are aware, but some people still do
this and they kind of just STUFF keywords into content on their pages where they can,
you know, their “money making” keywords, and that’s not what you want to do, that’s a very
very obvious sign, that’s a red flag for Google that “these guys are just optimising their
website for this, and that’s very unnatural, I’m going to rank them down”. What you really
want to be doing is writing content that’s actually appealing and useful for the user.
Still mention keywords, because at the end of the day, you want to let Google know what
your website is all about, but don’t overdo it. Don’t go over the top with it. Keep users engaged! At the end of the day,
that will reduce your bounce rate, and your bounce rate is one of the things that Google
will look at when they want to know if this website is good or not. So if everyone is
bouncing off… It’s obviously not good 🙂 ‘Don’t underestimate social media’. Social
media is becoming a big part of the Google Algorithms now. Social signals are very important.
What a lot of people do is still buy fake stats; fake likes, fake views, etc. Don’t
do that. Neglecting your account – so, making your account today, posting a few things tomorrow
and the day after, leaving it for months on end; that’s not good. It kind of gives your
audience, or whatever audience you may have, an uneasy experience “what can I expect?” Don’t try and sell through social! People
don’t go on their Facebook or on their Twitter to go through this feed and be sold stuff
to, “buy this, and buy that”. If you do really want to promote yourself, be a little more
subtle with it, and I guess, be useful while you’re doing it. ‘Leverage social signals’. So, update your
social media profiles regularly; once every day, maybe even once every two days is fine,
just let your audience know what to expect. Build a real following, and that kind of goes
with infographics and engaging your audience, and just interacting with people on social
media is really good. Maybe if you’ve got a client base already send them e-mails after
they do an order with you, maybe say “why don’t you follow us on Facebook & Twitter”
– that’s a very good idea as well. Engage and entertain your followers which also links
with building a following, because they’ll share what statuses you have with everyone
else, all their friends, etc. if it’s useful. And at the end of the day, this also counts
as social signals. Engaging and entertaining your followers. Because if Google sees that
you’re popular on Facebook, and you’re engaging with people, they’re talking to you and everyone
wants to talk to you, they’re going to think “hang on, if they’re popular here, I’m going
to make sure they rank a little bit higher on my search engine”. And at the end of it
all, this all leads to “what does Google want?”. Think – what does Google want? Google wants
to be the most relevant search engine in the world, which they are. They want to give their
users the best experience, so if they’re searching for something, they want to find the right
thing, so make sure you optimise your site accordingly! I’m Rafid Nassir from and thanks
