CHANNEL UPDATE: Playing the Musical Saw & Beta-Testing Youtube Sponsorships

By | January 22, 2020

Hey everyone, let’s get right to the most important part of this video, my new background, do you like it? I always like the culture of YouTube backgrounds I thought I made something that was a little bit hard to beat What do you think? Maybe I should make some background music from the wall to make the video a little nice. Did you ever hear a musical saw before? This is a Sandviken Stradivarius. I need something to play to. YouTube recently reached out and asked if we wanted to be part of a beta test of the YouTube sponsorship function. After some thinking we said yes, and in this video I want to tell you what it is and why we’re doing it. So let’s start briefly with what it is. It’s a way for viewers to financially support the creators and their favorite YouTube channels. I’ve been seeing a lot of comments from you asking us to start a Patreon page and reading these comments actually made me say yes when YouTube asked if we wanted to try the sponsorship function here. By enabling this function all of you who have been telling us that you want to support the channel now have a way to do so. One thing that I would like to mention about it is that I don’t believe in exclusivity behind paywalls. That’s why I often put out my music for free on Bandcamp. When I have put a lot of effort into doing something, I want everyone to see and hear it, regardless of if they’re paying or not When we start this YouTube sponsorship, you have to fill out what kind of perks you are giving the sponsors, what kind of exclusive perks. And as I said, I’m not a big fan of exclusivity behind paywalls So the two perks we’re offering to the sponsors is– –the first one is even a non-perk [laughter] So, the first perk is that you get to support our channel and our work towards the world tour. The second part is a monthly Q&A, and that will be for sponsors only, when it’s live, but already, the day after, the video will be up on the YouTube channel for everyone to see. So the only exclusivity — oh there is also a badge you get if you sponsor you get — actually I can show you. So you get a little badge. When you comment on a Wintergatan video you will have this little W taken from my guitar after your comment as a kind of way of saying “I’m supporting the world tour”, so I deliberately wanted to keep the exclusivity… ………. …down, because as I said, I want it to be open for everyone. How will we use the financial support? Two ways: first of all we will make sure to not miss a Wednesday video. We will work on the continuity and consistency– –and we will work on our English also. And secondly, I’m gonna use it to make the world tour happen. I realized I think a concert should pay for itself by the ticket sales, but the preparations for this is a little bit extreme probably need to build a backup marble machine, and I need to have a lot of people helping me planning this so, if you choose to support Wintergatan, you also support the project of getting the marble machine onto a stage. The sponsor button is not always shown. For example on iOS it’s never shown and in some countries is not shown. So it’s most often shown next to the subscribe button on laptop. I’m really happy that YouTube reached out and asked and I’m excited for this because it might be a helping hand in the big projects that are underway. So warmly welcome to sponsors of the channel and also warmly welcome to not sponsors of the channel, because either way we’re gonna develop the channel to make it better and better for everyone regardless if you’re a sponsor or not. Since the marble machine video a lot of big corporations have been offering me sponsorship opportunities, and I have been systematically turning them all down. I don’t feel that cigarettes and car brands represents the future the way I see it, and I think it’s so cool that we can just sidestep that whole thing and make all this work ourselves. The song in this video is a truly improvised lo-fi piece that I made to make this announcement video a little bit more interesting. I have made a clean audio version of this song and you can download that for free at wintergatan.bandcamp.com Thank you so much for watching and see you on the next Wintergatan Wednesday.

Its unbelievable that cigarette companies and other abominations even have the impertinence to offer sponsorship. Great you dont cooperate with them. I see so many people that i like cooperate with Red-bull, which is owned by an Austrian ashole that can build up its media imperium by the money he makes, to make Austria a more racist place. This makes me really sad, but i am happy that private sponsorship like patreon or similar works so well, that people can really live from it.

    Dear friend

I'm glad to see how much your channel has grown.

His first song for me was the light that came through the crack in the door.

I was depressed at the time. I do not know if you will see this comment but I wanted to tell you that I understand the love you feel for your dreams.

And when I said that you do not intend to make your art your exclusive music for those who pay then I was sure that you are also an angel here on earth. I'm a big fan. Keep turning your feelings into friend music. Cause your song saved me and it can save many.

watching this video on 11th November 2019 and looking at how Martin talks and acts in this video, he has come a long way since this video, he is more confident and more relaxed with talking and explaining things now, its a real credit to how hard he has worked over the last couple of years, Well Done Martin, you make such lovely music out of such unusual items and get them to sing together so well, very proud of you.

Well, I'll be. I was watching the movie "Delicatessen" (1991) and there was a part in there when the protagonist plays the musical saw, and it reminded me of Wintergatan. Lo and behold, here we are!

Improve your English? Nah, your English is just fine. You ever hear someone from the Southern United States speak? Gad! You'd swear their from another planet. Had a friend from Lubbock Texas & when he wasn't fully awake he sounded like he was taking with a mouth full of marbles… speaking of. Now I have somewhat of a Southern accent & I'm not from the South. But, my accent isn't anywhere as thick as his was. So don't worry about your English accent. Anyone who won't try to understand you isn't trying. They're just plain lazy.
